Besides shaping the futures of elementary schoolchildren, Leslie Campbell has been shaping future school leaders by mentoring and coaching principal interns for the past three years. “I feel blessed to be a part of this process,” she says. Campbell has been principal of Anne Wien Elementary for a decade. Her urban Pre-K-6 school serves 439 students, and nearly a third are Alaskan Natives. The after-school program, which Campbell developed, is a model in the district and has received three competitive grants. Campbell has greatly boosted teachers’ leadership and professional development by incorporating professional learning communities within her school. For example, book talks that Campbell facilitates for teachers have enabled them to stay current on best practices in education. To gain parents’ insight on the direction of critical grant-funded programs, Campbell includes them in an After School Advisory Board and Title 1 Team. On the district’s biannual parent survey, Campbell’s school has received consistently high ratings. The school’s partnerships with businesses and other community organizations have benefited students by providing tutoring, dental health instruction, money management classes for intermediate students, and an annual art show. “Anne Wien has embraced instructional practices in which the community becomes the classroom,” says Campbell. She credits her school’s success in part to its shared leadership approach. She has a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Oregon at Eugene.
