Seven years ago, Kenneth Davis opened the new campus of Hillman Forest McNeill Elementary. Since then he has led the suburban Pre-K-5 school to demonstrate an exemplary performance level despite many challenges. The student population of 695 includes large numbers who are socially disadvantaged and considered at risk of school failure. Yet Davis has developed a committed and devoted staff that shares his high expectations for students’ academic potential. The support of master teachers at Davis’s school helps ensure high-quality classroom instruction. “The development of a full core instructional team is crucial to the instructional leadership at McNeill and has proven to be the catalyst for teacher growth and student learning,” Davis says. Under his supervision, McNeill teachers use research-based practices and programs for struggling learners and tailor instruction to meet students’ needs. Davis promotes opportunities for teachers to advance their professional learning. He also celebrates students’ learning at regular schoolwide Success Assemblies. “Our campus has been called a beacon of hope for the students in a challenging and diverse community,” Davis says. Among accolades he has received for his work in education, colleagues and supervisors in his school district honored him as Elementary Principal of the Year in 2007-2008. He holds a B.S. from Rockford College in Illinois and an M.Ed. from the University of St. Thomas in Texas.
