“I feel blessed to have this wonderful job with the opportunities it affords me to do what I truly love—working with children and people,” says Kay York, who has been principal of Margaret Daniel Primary School since 2000. The rural school has an enrollment of 230 children in kindergarten and grade 1 and 80 children enrolled in a pre-kindergarten program on-site. York enjoys working with parents, grandparents, and community members to benefit student learning. To engage families in supporting student achievement, her school hosts families on Monday nights for reading and other activities as part of a decade-old program funded by local sponsors. York’s key accomplishments as a principal include founding a foundation for her school in 2004, through which more than $60,000 has been procured to provide extra educational materials, technology, and learning opportunities for students and teachers at the school. The foundation has been particularly helpful in enabling teachers to receive grants to support instructional innovations without an extensive wait for funding approval or disbursement. York was named one of nine master principals in her state, an honor she received after participating in four years of advanced professional training through the Arkansas Leadership Academy. She holds a B.S.E. from Southern Arkansas University, an M.Ed. from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, an M.S.Ed. from the University of Central Arkansas, and an M.S. from Texas A&M University.
