Kappy Cannon has overseen the energizing transformation of her school into a technology magnet site. With its focus on high-tech studies, Forest Lake Elementary Technology Magnet School takes advantage of its partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to support its curriculum in an integral way. The school uses state-of-the-art technology throughout instruction. As a result, students produced a national award-winning magazine for the past four years. “The experience has provided us with exposure and recognition at the state, national, and international levels,” says Cannon of her school’s magnet programming. Honors the school has garnered include the Intel School of Distinction Excellence Award, National Magnet Schools of America Distinguished School Award, and status as a SMART Showcase School of America. Cannon’s school also received the Carolina First Palmetto’s Finest Award. She describes this achievement as the result of “professional development at its best” and stresses that her staff shares a vision of excellence. Situated in an urban area, Cannon’s pre-kindergarten through grade 8 school serves 577 students. Starting in 1992, Cannon held positions as a counselor and then as the assistant principal of the school. She assumed the principalship in 2000. She holds a B.A. from Converse College in South Carolina, a master’s from the University of South Carolina, and an Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
