Joann BorchettaJoann Borchetta has devoted herself to the spiritual and instructional leadership of her urban Pre-K-5 Catholic school for more than two decades. The community of faith she nurtures among her staff members shows in their practice of praying together every morning. Borchetta also encourages the school’s students and families to live their faith. One way she promotes weekly church attendance among young children is by sending home a Jesus doll and journal in which priests add entries at church. In fulfilling her role as instructional leader, Borchetta has found that promoting an understanding of learning styles has been essential. “This understanding has inspired teachers to differentiate learning by taking learning styles of each student into account when planning and implementing lessons in their class,” she says. Under Borchetta, St. Cecilia School has been involved in two international outreach projects serving people in need. Borchetta also started a fund to help struggling families in her school’s immediate community. The fund has provided more than $10,000 each year for temporary assistance to families experiencing a job loss, medical needs, or other misfortunes. Borchetta has been principal of St. Cecilia School since 1988. The school’s enrollment is now 289. She has a B.A. from the College of New Rochelle in New York, an M.A. from Fordham University in New York, and an Ed.D. from St. John’s University.
