Wildwood Park Elementary School
Puyallup School District No. 3
Puyallup, Washington

“We are continually amazed at the levels students reach when we set the bar higher,” says Glenn Malone. An elementary principal since 1992, Malone has headed Wildwood Park Elementary School for the past five years. The suburban pre-kindergarten through grade 6 school serves students from the largest subsidized housing project in the district. Nearly half of the 535 student population is low-income, but Wildwood’s extraordinary improvements in student reading and math skills over several years earned the school a School of Distinction Award from Washington state’s Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2007. To provide meaningful learning opportunities for Wildwood students, Malone developed a school program that engages youngsters in team-building and problem-solving activities. At the school’s closed-circuit television station, students who previously had struggled academically or had attendance problems now arrive early to write and produce a daily school news show that is broadcast live. Malone also has led his staff in implementing a framework for supporting intensive individualized instruction in mathematics. The new approach includes using common assessments across classes at each grade level to better monitor student learning. And the school schedule gives priority to teacher collaboration time and blocks of time for interventions with struggling learners. Malone holds a B.A.  from Western Washington University, an M.A. from Central Washington University, and an Ed.D. from Washington State University.
