Dean M. WarrenfeltzAs he serves students facing economic hardships, Dean Warrenfeltz maintains high academic expectations for all. “My philosophy has always been that our school should understand where our children come from and the challenges they face,” he says, “but that we cannot allow these challenges to be an excuse for not succeeding. It is our job to use all the resources available to us to give the students every opportunity to reach their potential.” Warrenfeltz has headed Winchester Avenue School since 2005. Sixty-eight percent of the Pre-K-3 school’s 206 students are poor. Warrenfeltz has promoted business partnerships that support many school activities. He also has overseen the implementation of an instructional intervention program at his school to help students who score below benchmark levels in reading. In his previous principalship, from 1999 to 2005, Warrenfeltz led the Burke Street School in Martinsburg to rise from a “needs improvement” designation to status as a “West Virginia School of Excellence.” His professional contributions include chairing a pre-kindergarten planning team for his school system. In that role, he helped establish a pilot program to expand early educational services to encompass three child-care center sites, two public school classrooms, and a pre-kindergarten center for students with special needs. He has a B.S. from Frostburg State University in Maryland and an M.A. from West Virginia University.
