Budd Dingwall has an impressive record of guiding schools to excellence. In a long career as an elementary principal, Dingwall has led two schools to receive National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Awards from the U.S. Department of Education. For the past six years, he’s been principal of John B. Codington Elementary School. Under his direction, the suburban school has earned five consecutive Honor School of Excellence awards. The statewide distinction marks the highest level of achievement for schools in North Carolina. Dingwall’s kindergarten through grade 5 school has a student body of 525. Dingwall especially appreciates the dedication to and involvement in service learning projects of his students, staff, and parents. The projects have raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research, hunger and disaster relief, dormitory construction in Africa, and playground construction, notes Dingwall. He also is proud of his school’s high degree of support from parents and community members. “I believe the level of success a school attains is directly related to the amount of parent and community support it receives,” he says. Codington Elementary shows appreciation for school volunteers through an annual luncheon that culminates with a schoolwide parade of volunteers through the hallways. Teachers and students cheer and hold up posters as volunteers pass by them. Dingwall received his B.S. and M.Ed. from Kent State University in Ohio.
