Brian S. Galdes“I believe that our students need to develop skills and the knowledge base to become global citizens,” says Brian Galdes, principal of George H. Fisher Elementary School since 1994. Galdes takes pride in having led a “Classroom Without Walls” initiative at his K-5 school. The program enables his students to learn Mandarin Chinese and use videoconferencing and other technology to make friends with peers around the globe. Galdes also is proud to have worked with his school staff members, parents, and community leaders “to create a welcoming school that serves the whole community.” Galdes embraces the presence of community organizations, parent and student groups, and township athletic teams who use his school’s facilities and equipment seven days a week. Fisher Elementary serves 446 students, half of whom live in low-income households. Galdes promotes activities to maintain the school’s positive and inviting environment. For example, this year the office staff pursued a book study of customer service practices. Reinforcing community pride, the school’s “News Wall” displays document the accomplishments of students, parents, and staff members. As president of the Michigan Elementary and Middle Schools Principals Association, Galdes led the challenging process of selecting a new executive director. He also helped smooth the transition between the departing and incoming directors. His B.S. and his M.Ed. are from Wayne State University in Michigan.
