Cold and Flu Season Is Here: How to Stay Prepared

Here are three ways school leaders can support cleaner classrooms this fall.

As the seasons change, so do the challenges schools face. Cooler weather brings more time indoors and increased exposure to germs—especially in shared spaces like classrooms. However, reinforcing good hygiene can help minimize the spread and keep students and staff focused on learning, rather than worrying about lingering germs.

Here are three ways school leaders can support cleaner classrooms this fall:

1. Reinforce Hand Hygiene Routines: Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of germs. Encourage teachers and staff to build handwashing into the school day, especially before lunch and after recess or restroom use. Post clear signage near sinks and remind students to wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.

2. Disinfect What You Can’t See: Even when surfaces look clean, illness-causing germs can still be present. That’s why daily disinfecting is important, especially on high-touch surfaces like desks, doorknobs, shared supplies, faucet handles, and light switches. Lysol® Disinfectant Spray and Lysol® Disinfecting Wipes kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria when used as directed, making it easier to target invisible threats throughout the day.

3. Keep Supplies Handy For Easy Cleanup: Ensure every classroom has access to supplies like disinfecting wipes, tissues, and sprays for quick cleanups between custodial rounds. Having these items on hand supports a proactive cleaning routine and reinforces the importance of daily hygiene without disrupting instruction.
