Matt Miller has served Roundtown Elementary School as principal for 16 years and has served his district as a teacher and administrator since 1998. Throughout his dedicated tenure, Miller has demonstrated the power of consistency in leadership as a champion of the Responsive Classroom technique. Initially trained in the approach as a new teacher, Miller has led schoolwide implementation of the program for 20 years, creating consistent expectations, language, and practices that transcend a single classroom, permeating every aspect of learning and culture. After an initial five-year implementation period, Roundtown has continued to deepen its application of this philosophy through annual professional development and ongoing engagement with students in the school improvement process. Always eager to help students bring their visions to life, in 2013 Miller helped a Roundtown student realize the concept of a “Buddy Bench” where lonely students could sit to signal to their peers that they want to be invited to play. The project went viral and there are now at least 30,000 such benches world-wide, including in every state. As an experienced principal, Miller takes responsibility for molding leaders for the future through active mentorship of junior administrators, creating meaningful leadership opportunities for students, and his broader commitment to service, including his participation in the Liberia Public School Project. Miller holds an Ed.D. from Immaculata University, and M.Ed. and B.S. degrees from the Pennsylvania State University.
