Leaving the behind the familiar, pioneers ventured to the West to begin a new life on the frontier. Never traveling alone, groups of pioneers joined together in covered wagons. Like a slow moving train, the caravan traveled only 10 to 15 miles in a day. Inclement weather limited travel often to one mile in a day. Inspired to create a new life, the pioneers moved forth beyond the boundaries of the known world. The elements did not limit the expansion.
In the midst of the pioneers, the wagon master, or captain, made decisions that affected the entire band. His goal was to care for the members of the wagon train while at the same helping the group to reach the new frontier. From the rising of the sun to the setting of the same, the captain positioned the pioneers for success. The purpose of the group was greater than the individual dreams.
In the twenty first century the wagon master, or principal, is challenged by the elements of a different nature. Through drastic budget cuts, wagon supplies have been limited. Provisions rationed. Equipment has become worn and tattered. Bins left empty. Skilled recruits discouraged. And, gifted workers held hostage.
Not dictated by this state of educational affairs, the administrator continues to inspire, motivate, and encourage those under his care. He rallies the staff, students, parents, and community and maintains the vision of an educated citizenry. The captain guides the wagons through the raging rivers of state mandates, parental concerns, and society’s expectations making certain that they do not sink. Willing to serve, the principal becomes the replacement, standby, and substitute. When the school doors close, during the night hours, the principal does not forsake his calling. Rather, he sustains the fire and maintains the glow.
Alone. Hidden emotions are released. Exhausted physically, discouraged emotionally, and worn down spiritually the principal prays for a miracle and believes for the impossible. Will supplies arrive to sustain the wagon train? Will there be help for the pioneers of education? Waiting for an answer is not acceptable. Before dawn he rises and prepares himself for the conquest. He leads with a sense of purpose. Education must carry on.
He will not surrender.
