Description:
Principal Performance Appraisal (PPA) in Canada is designed as a growth model for developing leadership capacity. The appraisal process requires professional dialogue and collaboration between a school leader and a supervisor. It focuses on working toward goals by providing formal and informal opportunities for feedback and continuous professional learning.
Using the Ontario Leadership Framework as the basis for conversations, we aim to deepen the understanding for the appraiser and the principal being appraised as it relates to the practices associated with effective leaders. The appraisal process is intended to support and promote professional growth and development. When all the components are implemented in a coherent way, linked to school improvement goals, and connected to ongoing professional learning, the process becomes fully integrated into the daily work that leaders do.
Presenter:
Joanne Robinson is the director of professional learning for Education Leadership Canada (ELC) at the Ontario Principals’ Council (OPC).
Her involvement with OPC began in 1998 when Robinson was a member of the Interim Council that developed OPC. Most of her work was originally with the professional affairs committee on the Founding Council. She was appointed as president-elect in 1998 and served as OPC president during 1999-2000. She returned to OPC in 2001 to continue her work on designing, developing and implementing the Principals’ Qualification Program and the Supervisory Officers Qualification Program.
Robinson has been committed to exemplary professional learning for principals since her term as president. She continues to spend much of her time working with principals and vice-principals to develop workshops, courses, online learning programs, and opportunities for school leaders to develop the skills, expertise, and experiences needed in this new environment. She is passionate about mentoring and coaching and the powerful vehicle it can be for supporting education leaders. Joanne has recently completed her Doctorate of Education Leadership.
An educator since 1972, she has served in many capacities during that time. She was previously a principal with the Thames Valley Board of Education. As the mother of two and a grandmother of eight, Robinson’s interest in, and commitment to, public education in Ontario is both personal and professional.
