Alexandria, VA—June 3, 2010—Sharon Pitts, principal of Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Terra Haute, Indiana, was recently appointed as the middle-level representative to the board of directors of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Foundation. Gail Connelly, NAESP’s executive director, announced the appointment from the Association’s headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.
Pitts will begin her three-year term on July 1.
“The next few years are going to be exciting and challenging ones for NAESP as we begin to see possible changes that may be on the agenda for the children and principals across our nation,” Pitts said. “It is going to be very important that the NAESP Foundation work to disseminate information relative to the organization’s vision to improve the quality of education for all students.”
Pitts has been a member of NAESP since 1986, serving on the Resolutions Committee since 2008 and on the Vision 2021 Committee in 2006. She has also been affiliated with the Indiana Association of School Principals since 1986, serving on its board of directors (1994-1997, 2001-2004) and as president in 2005.
Pitts also served as secretary for the United Way board of directors and was an executive board member of Leadership Terre Haute.
Pitts began her education career in 1969 as an elementary school teacher with Vigo County Schools. She became a principal in 1986, working at three elementary schools in Terre Haute before moving in 1993 to her current position as principal of Woodrow Wilson Middle School, where she was named the Indiana Middle School Principal of the Year in 2000.
Pitts earned a B.S. and M.S. in elementary education from Indiana State University and an Ed.D. in school administration from Indiana University.
