Convention News Online
April 2011
NAESP’s convention will feature a number of “green” projects and initiatives, including a Green School Pavilion, Green Fair, and a complimentary sustainability education course, all in an effort to showcase sustainability education as a successful platform for multidisciplinary learning
In the Green Schools Pavilion, attendees will find exhibitors ready to help schools go green—everything from dealing with waste to curriculum and green building. Thanks to Sprint Nextel and Samsung Telecommunications America’s (Samsung Mobile) ongoing commitment to and support of sustainability and education, conference attendees will receive complimentary access to Green Education Foundation’s (GEF) new “Sustainability Education Teaching Methods” course. This course provides teachers with the knowledge and resources necessary to integrate sustainability education into their curriculum.
In addition, Sprint and Samsung Mobile are hosting the Green Fair on Saturday, April 9, where students from Tampa’s Dowdell Middle Magnet School will take part in engaging hands-on sustainability education activities. Green Fair activities include:
- Racing Solar Cars: Renewable energy concepts come to life as students build and race solar cars.
- Green Keepers Pledge: Principals join students in their promise to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
- Recycling Relay Race: Student teams race relay-style to sort a bucket full of clean recyclables.
- Recycled Paper Art: Students create a masterpiece mosaic from recycled paper.
The exhibit hall will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 8-9, with the Green Fair taking place from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
