Alexandria, VA—May 19, 2010—Dean M. Warrenfeltz, principal of Winchester Avenue School in Martinsburg, West Virginia, was recently elected to the 15-person board of directors of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) in a nationwide election. Gail Connelly, NAESP’s executive director, announced the results from the Association’s headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.
Warrenfeltz begins his three-year term as Director for Zone 3 on July 1, representing elementary and middle-level principals in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.
“This career is both an opportunity to have a positive impact and an awesome responsibiltity. Fortunately, NAESP supports prinicpals in this demanding job,” Warrenfeltz said. “I am very proud of my 10+ years of service as a Federal Relations Coordinator. In ths position I have had many opportunities to refine my skills as an advocate for principals, children, and public schools.”
Warrenfeltz has been a member of NAESP since 1999, serving as a state representative (2009-present) and Federal Relations Coordiantor (1999-2009) and working with the National Leaders Conference (2001, 2006-2009) and the Delegate Assembly (2002, 2007-2009). He has been a member of the West Virginia Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals (1999-present), serving as president (2006-2008), vice president (2004-2005), and on the executive committee (2002-2003).
In 2009, he was named a National Distinguished Principal; between 2005-2009 he led a Title I Distinguished School; and in 2002 his school was named a West Virginia School of Excellence.
Warrenfeltz began his career as a choral/general music teacher at Martinsburg South Middle School in 1981. He became an assistant principal of Hedgesville High School in 1990 and became principal in 1997, a position he held until 1999. He served as principal of Burke Street School from 1999-2005, when he was named to his current position at Winchester Avenue School.
Warrenfeltz earned his B.S. in music education from Frostburg State Univesity and his M.A. in education administration from West Virginia University.
