National Mentor Program

MentoringRecruiting and retaining top-quality principals is a tough job.

New and even experienced principals need support. With high-stakes accountability and increasing demands on school leaders, principal mentors—retired and active seasoned professionals—provide a crucial support system, offering advice and counsel to fellow principals

What People Are Saying

"The Mentoring Training awakens in me my passion to 'Do Something!' As a result of this training, I can't wait to INTENTIONALLY mentor someone and INTENTIONALLY secure an active mentor for myself. We all need mentoring at every stage in our career."

—Dr. Felicia Butler, Principal, Annie Burnside Elementary, Columbia, SC

National School Leadership Mentor Standards

NAESP has developed a set of standards that guide the training and development of highly effective mentors. Mentors must stay focused on the research and current practices involved in mentoring school leaders, such as principals, superintendents, directors, central office staff, etc. An understanding of adult learning, as well as integrating the professional performance standards for principals that are unique to their daily work, is critical. To review the NAESP Mentor Standards please click here.

NAESP Principals Helpline

Experienced principals can also volunteer for the NAESP Principals Helpline by answering questions and providing support online. Teams of principals monitor the Helpline and respond to everyday questions that our members ask. It is a great way to provide feedback and reflect on your own work as a school leader! For more information about how you can serve and be involved e-mail mentor@naesp.org.
